Originally built in 1898 the Hotel has gone through many changes and the original building has gone through a series of major and continuous renovations since 2001, with the accent on retaining the historical feel of this landmark building whilst providing all the modern amenities one would expect from a contemporary Hotel, such as free use of hard-wired HSIA in all rooms. The rooms and bathrooms have been completely overhauled and tastefully appointed. Our main bar, The Polo Tavern, is one of downtown Aiken’s most popular watering holes. We have live entertainment on Wednesday, Thurday, Friday and Saturday nights and are open seven days a week. Elevation at the lake is 6,229 feet
Mark Twain described Lake Tahoe "I thought it must be the fairest picture the whole earth affords" and the indians referred to it as "big sky lake". Lake Tahoe is best known for its beautiful blue and clear water (99% pure), and is surrounded by mountains which rise more than 4,000 feet above the shore. The lake is 22 miles long, 12 miles wide; about one-third lies in Nevada, the rest in California. The water drains from Lake Tahoe through the Truckee River which is one of a few rivers that run inland to the desert rather than towards the ocean. Pyramid Lake, the reminant of ancient oceans which use to cover Nevada's desert is the final destination of the Truckee River. Lake Tahoe is the third deepest lake in North America as it has an average depth of 989 feet but the deepest point is about 1,645 feet. The surface water (12 feet) can warm to 68 F in summer, allowing swimming, while depths below 700 feet remain a constant 39 F. Perhaps this is why Lake Tahoe is comfortable through the summer despite its proximity to the desert. Annual snowfall averages 40 feet, with snowpack averaging 20 feet which explains why downhill a skiing and cross-country skiing are very popular in the winter. Summer activities include hiking, white water rafting, beach pinics and other water activities. There are many ski and summer resorts as well as state park locations to choose from.
